The Brazilian Adventure begins

We arrived in Rio to begin a Brazilian cruise. We had 3 overnights which meant that we were able to enjoy the city and take in some of the festivities.

The first experience was a Crew Tour of the highlights of Rio. The day started and was rainy. We met outside only to realize that neither Akis nor I had the foresight to actually bring an umbrella. BRILLIANT. So for $5 a piece we purchased our plastic rain coats ~ yes Beth, just like the ones we used to wear.

On our way to our transportation, we crossed the street and saw some of the floats that were going to be used in the parade that night.

Our first stop was at the Maracana, the largest Soccer stadium in the world. While it no longer holds the largest number of spectators, this honour belongs to Mexico, this stadium is in fact the largest building in the world. We took a tour of the interior of the stadium. Here are some of the things they had outside the entrance:

The view from inside the stadium:

The exclusive VIP room

The actual field surface

Despite the rain we decided that we were going to head up to the Christ. With all the rain pouring down, we were skeptical of what we were going to see. Perhaps we could see the statue, but we weren't going to see the city with weather like this. Akis kept saying that in all the previous years he was here that it was very time consuming to go to the statue, cause the traffic is terrible. He was surprised as we headed up that we weren't running into traffic issues ~ perhaps this was due to the rain. Because we weren't going to see the city, we stopped at a view point 300m up. Here is what we saw.

And the view of the Christ... Yes, he isn't there.

As we made it up to the Christ, there was no traffic and no wait! How lucky for us, even luckier was that within 10 minutes of arriving, the rain slowed and eventually stopped, and the clouds parted. Here is what we saw.

And of course there was a wee church inside the Christ:

The last stop was at the Copa, Copacabana. We weren't treated to the Brazilian bikinis and beaches full of half naked people, but it was cool to stand on one of the more famous beaches in the world.

Here they had a small market which sold the latest in Club wear...

And that was our tour, but there was still more to see....
