The Family arrives
Akis and I have been very fortunate that despite the distance, some of our family will be able to attend the wedding with us. The first group to arrive was a group of 7 when you include the baby... Dad, Jane, Krista, Craig and Chloe along with Uncle John and Aunt Flo came into Athens. Akis and I rose at a crazy early hour to meet them at the airport and help organize them. The flight was suppose to arrive at 9am, however due to delays, Akis and I had a couple hours to kill at the airport. YES, this means more coffee!
We finally saw them coming through the door and we were ready to go. Chloe apparently did very well on the flight over which is fantastic given that it was over 10hrs. With the delay there was some concern that there may not be enough munchies for her, but it seemed that they made it OK.
We sent one suitcase with the parental units and in hindsight with the size of Akis' car, we should have sent 2 bags. While his car isn't as tiny as the Miata, it definitely isn't a 'cart your family from the airport' kind of vehicle. God they drive small cars in Europe.
Having never driven into the city proper from the airport, we headed out and Akis said we'll give it a go, and God help us. Well as we made if off the Toll road and headed into town, he got directions from someone at the light ~ great we are on the right path... Until we weren't and we found ourselves heading back onto the Toll road and we were heading in the other direction!! Once we found ourselves in Athens proper, many of the streets are narrow and go in one direction. Not so good when you aren't quite sure where you are going. We managed to make it half a block from the hotel and needed to jump the curb onto the cobblestone, but Akis was concerned ~ so we headed back out only to find no other street that headed towards the hotel. After heading 3km in the wrong direction we managed to make our way back towards the hotel. Ironically enough, the street in front of the hotel is One Way ~ and you can only go the right direction if you go down the cobblestone. Who knew!
Early in the visit we gathered in Jane and Dad's room to discuss future events ~ these would include an island trip and a visit for a family lunch... but more on that later!
